Terms

These are the terms for using Recipe Folio AI. They are written to be read, not to be impressive. If a line here does not match what the app does, the app is right and the line is a mistake: write to us and we will fix it.

The app is free

Recipe Folio AI is free to download from the App Store. Scanning is free and unlimited. There is no scan counter and there never will be.

These are free for as long as the app exists, with no subscription: scanning, Chinese reading, every recipe you have already saved, editing, scaling, Chinese weights to grams, printing and sharing recipes, cook mode, timers and the cook count. Nothing on that list is moved behind a payment later. If you never pay us anything, the app you have keeps working the way it works today.

Reading a photo on the phone itself, for free, uses Apple Intelligence, which needs an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPad with M1 or later. On another phone, the free way to read a page is your own OpenAI key, described below.

Recipe Folio Plus

Plus is an optional subscription. It adds four things: photo reading, which sends the photograph of a page through our server to a stronger model to be read, fifty photo readings a month; a meal planner; events; and shopping lists. Nothing else is behind it. A reading can hold up to four photos and counts as one.

Plus costs US$2.99 a month or US$19.99 a year. Prices are set in the App Store and vary by country, so the price you will actually pay is the one shown in the app before you subscribe. There is no free trial. When you tap Subscribe, Apple bills you that day.

The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before that period ends. You cancel in your Apple Account subscription settings. On the phone that is Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Recipe Folio AI. The Plus screen in the app also has a Manage or cancel link that opens the same place. Cancelling keeps Plus running until the end of the period you have already paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's own terms.

If Plus lapses, nothing is deleted. Your recipes are untouched, and the meal plans, events and shopping lists already on the phone stay on the phone. The planner, events and shopping lists go back to being locked until you subscribe again.

Apple's terms

Apple handles every payment. We never see a card number. Apple's standard licence agreement applies to the app itself, and Apple's Media Services terms apply to the subscription.

Reading and formatting

Recipe Folio AI reads a photo of a page and sorts the words into a recipe. It reads English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. It is not perfect. An ingredient can be misread, a quantity can be wrong, a step can land out of order.

Check the result before you cook, and check it twice for allergens and for anything where the amount matters. You can edit every part of a recipe, before you save it and at any time after.

If you use the OpenAI fallback

The OpenAI key is yours. You open the account, you add the credit, you pay OpenAI for what you use. We do not manage, see or hold your OpenAI account or your key, and we add nothing to what OpenAI charges you. Only the recognised text is sent, never the photo, and it goes straight from your phone to OpenAI. OpenAI's terms of use cover what OpenAI does with the text you send.

Your recipes

Recipes, meal plans, events and shopping lists are stored on your phone. Recipe Folio AI keeps no copy anywhere else, and our server never receives a saved recipe. There is no account, no cloud and no sync, which also means there is nothing for us to restore: if you delete the app, the recipes on that phone go with it, so move them with your phone's own transfer or backup before you wipe it.

No warranty

The app is provided as it is. We work to keep it reliable and we do not promise that reading or formatting will always be right.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from use of the app, including a formatting error, lost data, or charges from a third-party service you connected yourself. Some countries do not allow these limits. Where the law gives you rights we cannot exclude, those rights stand.

Changes

We may change these terms. Changes are posted here with a new date. Using the app after that date means you accept them. We cannot notify you directly, because we do not have your contact details.
